David W. (Dave) Witt, 69, Whitehall, died Thursday, February 5, 2015 at his home, after a four year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) is a lung disorder characterized by progressive scarring and deterioration of the lungs, which slowly robs its victims of their ability to breathe. Approximately 200,000 Americans suffer from PF, and there is currently no known cause or cure. He was born February 8, 1945, in Edgerton, Wis., the son of John C. and Maren A. (Haried) Witt. He married Harriet M. Carlson in Edgerton on August 19, 1967. Dave graduated from Edgerton Senior High School and the University of Wisconsin in Madison with a degree in accounting. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation and was honorably discharged in 1970. He pursued a career in bank information technology and financial management with community banks in Janesville, Appleton, Madison, and Whitehall, retiring in 2007 from John O. Melby & Co. Bank. Throughout his career, Dave sought continuing educational opportunities, which included schools at the University of Iowa, University of Michigan, and Cornell University, earning his CBA designation in 1975. He enjoyed collecting antiques, especially clocks, offering repair services in his home in Whitehall. Additionally, he was active in organizations in the communities where he and Harriet lived including Ducks Unlimited, Janesville Visiting Nurses, Whitehall Board of Review, and AARP Tax- Aide. He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Whitehall. Both he and Harriet enjoyed travelling to visit their children and explore new vacation destinations. David is survived by his wife of 47 years Harriet and their three children; Sonia (Eric) Klingbeil of Crawfordsville, Ind., Eric of Osceola, Wis., and Geoffrey of Rosedale, Calif.; three grandchildren, Lilly Klingbeil, Austin and Brennan Witt. Dave was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Donald, John T. (Jack), and Wendell (Windy). Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Whitehall, with Pastor Yvonne Marshall officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Hutchins-Stendahl American Legion Post 191. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.
