Mathias L. Rotering

Mathias L. Rotering, 86, of Independence, died Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at his home. He was born May 18, 1929 in Buffalo County, to Joseph and Gertrude (Pronschinske) Rotering. He married Genevieve Theisen on August 27, 1966 at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Independence. She died September 13, 2006. The couple farmed together on the farm they bought in April of 1970 near Independence. They retired and moved to the city of Independence in 2003. While farming, Mathias also worked part-time at Gallagher Locker Plant. He also did custom combining. Survivors include five children and seven grandchildren, Mary (Edward) Anderson and their children, Matthew and Barbara; Emil (special friend, Natasha Johnson) Rotering and his daughter, Mikayla; Eugene "Geno" (Vicky) Rotering and their children, Nate and Jacob all of Independence; Diane (Andrew) Elvaker and their children, Alyssa and Dylan of Taylor, Wis.; and Sandee Rotering of Independence; sister, Marion (Bill) Cavanaugh of St. Charles, Ill.; brother, Sylvester (Nona) Rotering of Winona; foster daughter, Barbara Kunes. The Rotering family housed a foreign exchange student, Kim Rolshoven of Great Britain. Mathias was preceded in death by his wife; son, Edward; siblings, Bernetta Haines, Jerome Rotering, Sister Josette Rotering, Florence Nelson and infant, Joseph Rotering. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 2, 2016 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with Very Rev. Woodrow H. Pace officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary, at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
