Bernice Kulig Woychik, 81, of Independence, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Tri-County Memorial Hospital in Whitehall. Bernice was born November 25, 1928 in Burnside Township, Trempealeau County, to Joseph and Gertrude (Dejno) Smick. She married Joseph Kulig on October 5, 1949 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Independence. He died August 6, 1996. On May 5, 2004, she married Albin A. Woychik at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She and Joseph farmed in Lincoln Township, Trempealeau County. In addition to raising her family, she worked at Tri-County Memorial Hospital and at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in their dietary departments. In later years, she was a cook at the Independence Children’s Center. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, its Women’s Organization and Rosary Society. Survivors include her husband, Albin of Independence; seven children, Robert (Jean) Kulig of Whitehall, Anne (John “Jack”) Helgeson of Independence, Joanne (John) Gast of Eau Claire, Carol (Ken) Slaby of Whitehall, Joe (Cathy) Kulig of Independence, Janet (John) Wollum of Independence and Jackie (Ken) Przybilla of Independence; a brother, Rudy (Lila) Smick of Cedarburg, Wis.; a sister, Rosemary (David) Pientok of Mondovi; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; six step-children, Betty (James) Feuling of Alma, Kathy (Patrick) Kupka of Whitehall, Mary (Randy) Gunderson, Joseph (Lois) Woychik, Charlie (Jennifer) Woychik, Peter (Robin) Woychik all of Independence; and many step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. Bernice was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph, and a step-son, Tom Woychik. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with Rev. David C. Kunz officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and 8-10 a.m. Friday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by a rosary.
