With tears glistening in our eyes and sadness in our hearts, the family of Edmund A. Lyga, 97, of Independence announce his passing from Earth on to the promised land on Sunday, June 15, 2025, where he resided at the Trempealeau County Healthcare Center. Edmund's pain and suffering ended on Father’s Day, as his spirit was finally set free from his failing body. We all feel at peace knowing that he will no longer be suffering and he is where he wanted to be for so long, at home in Heaven and in the loving arms of his wife, Florence. Together they will always be!
Edmund was born in Independence on November 16, 1927, to John P. and Julia (Weinch) Lyga. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Florence M. Julson on January 25, 1951, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Independence. Together they brought into the world three lovely daughters; Linda, Shelbie, and Roselyn. Edmund de-boned meat at Winona Packing and other area packing plants for several years.
He loved his home at Treampleau County Health Care Center and loved teasing and joking with the staff.
We will miss Ed dearly, but we all have been given the treasured gift of knowing him. We have no doubt that anyone that met him found themselves with a little bit of him left within their hearts.
He will mostly be remembered for his unconditional love for his wife, Florence, to whom he shared 72 years of marriage, his love and compassion for his family, as well as his huge smile that lit up any room, his hearty laugh, his joking ways, his faith, his Polish heritage, and his appreciation for the simple things like watching the birds, visiting his friends in his garage, and his love for hot chocolate.
Things will never be the same.. but we are better for the years we spent together, for what he taught us… both in life and death.
Edmund is survived by his daughters: Linda Peterson, Shelbie (Tom Reedy), and Roselyn (Loren) Nelson; brother: Ernie (Barbara) Lyga; sister; Rose Waletzko; 8 grandchildren: Stacy (John Doelle) Sokup, Tim Peterson, Amy (Tom) Laehn, Tasha (Tyler) Palkowski, Riley (Heather) Kupka, Alissa (Montarious Knight) Nelson, Christopher Nelson, and Mathew (Katherine) Nelson; 10 great-grandchildren: Courtney (Casey), Laurissa (Aspen), Aliyah, Dayton, Lydia, Andrea (Isaac), Kaylee, Sophia, and Jaelyn; 2 great-great-grandchildren: Peyton and Bill; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son-in-law: Bill Peterson; brothers: Harry Lyga, Johnny Lyga, and Aloysie Lyga; sisters: Dorothy Kampa, Theresa Przybilla, and Lorraine Prokop.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father George Thayilkuzhithottu officiating. Family and friends are invited for visitation one hour prior to the mass at church. Burial will be at a later date in the church cemetery.
