Judy Rombalski, 85, of rural Independence, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 24, 2025, at Gundersen Tri-County Hospital, with family by her side.
Judy was born on January 6, 1940, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, to Kasper and Veronica (Byrne) Underheim. She was raised in Ettrick, Wisconsin, where her family owned and operated the Hegg Store-a central part of her early life.
On March 3, 1962, she married Rudy Rombalski at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Ettrick. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and entrepreneurship. They were blessed with three children: Rhonda, Randy, and Rick. Their daughter Rhonda sadly passed away in infancy, a loss Judy carried with quiet grace throughout her life.
Besides Independence, Judy and Rudy lived in several places over the years-including Florida, St. Charles, and Blair-pursuing various business ventures. Judy played an active role in their family businesses, including running a store in St. Charles, MN, and helping with catering and restaurant operations. Her work was always driven by love and care for her family.
Known for her warmth and hospitality, Judy cherished time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved baking, going on casino trips, polka dancing, and praying the rosary. Her gentle back tickles growing up are a fond memory for her granddaughters, and her daily diary-faithfully tracking high and low temperatures-was a charming reflection of her attention to detail and love of routine. Her laughter and kind spirit will be deeply missed.
She was a devoted member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and the Rosary Society.
Judy is survived by her two sons: Randy and Rick (Janice) Rombalski, both of Independence; her brother, Jim (Barb) Underheim; her sisters, Maggie Ritter, Karen Koxlien, and Kathy Underheim; grandchildren, Jessica (Brandon) Stinson, Carly (Ryan), and Cody Rombalski; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Graeson, Preston, and Raena; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rudy; and their infant daughter, Rhonda.
Family and friends are welcome for visitation from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the Edison Funeral Home, where there will be a public prayer service held at 10 a.m. with Father George Thayilkuzhitottu officiating. Judy will be laid to rest at St. Bridget's Catholic Cemetery, rural Ettrick.
