Lucille Maule Fred

Lucille Maule Fred, 89, of Houston, Texas, died on Sunday, June 3, 2018 after a long and courageous battle with dementia. She was born June 4, 1928 to Peter and Mary (Gamroth) Maule and was the oldest of four children. She grew up on the family dairy farm just outside of Independence, Wisconsin. Lucy always remained a farm girl at heart. After graduating from Independence High School, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland to pursue a nursing degree from the St. Francis School of Nursing which was associated with Johns Hopkins Medical School and Hospital. This is where she met her future husband, Herbert L. Fred M.D. of Waco, Texas. They married in June 1954 and lived in Salt Lake City, Utah and Amarillo, Texas before moving to Houston, Texas in 1962 where Herb began his medical career and Lucy raised their three children. Lucy and Herb divorced in 1974 and remained close friends. Lucy loved to entertain and orchestrated dinner parties for family and friends throughout the years. She was an avid golfer and shared her love for the game with her sons, Stuart and Michael. She watched golf daily on TV right up to her passing. In 1995, she met Charles Fry, her loving soul mate, and together they traveled the world drinking wine, taking pictures and playing golf. They were constant companions until her health issues made it too difficult to be together. She spent her last six months in hospice care where she passed peacefully Sunday morning with her daughter, Nancy at her side. Lucy is survived by her children Stuart (Paula) Fred, Michael Fred, Nancy (Jan) Sadick, grandchildren Lauren (Conrad) Gibbons, Taylor (Jeffrey) Magids, Lisa (John) Guarino, Sydney (Jared) Nash, Chelsea Fred and Hannah Fred, and great grandson Jonah Nash. She is also survived by sister-in-law Becky Maule, nieces Sandi Brandt and Kim (Paul) Cassem, nephew Greg Maule and caregiver of five years Grace Nganga. Lucy was preceded in death by her brothers Ray, Walter “Fox” and Dennis Maule. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass at the church on Wednesday.
